Black Flag - The Flyer Art Of Raymond Pettibon
This book is a tribute to Black Flag’s iconic flyers and to Raymond Pettibon’s uncompromising visual language.
The images collected here come from the early hardcore era of the early 1980s. Raymond Pettibon, brother of Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn, not only shaped the band’s visual identity, but also designed the legendary four-bar logo.
His flyers are hand-drawn, black and white, often photocopied in a DIY style, raw, direct, and deliberately provocative. Typical features include scratchy linework, dark humour, noir aesthetics, imagery of violence, horror elements, and ironic to nihilistic commentary on American society.
These works promoted legendary shows, including one at the Peppermint Lounge in 1981, and became a visual hallmark of SST Records. A compact visual journey back to the era of early hardcore.
