Deadly Prey: Hand-Painted Movie Posters from Ghana
Deadly Prey features the dazzling, over-the-top hand-painted movie posters from Ghana commissioned by Odd Obsession Movies in Chicago.
This bizarre hand-painted poster culture grew out of Ghana’s mobile cinema era - traveling video clubs toured towns with a TV, a VCR, VHS tapes, and a generator, then used large painted posters to sell tickets.
Artists often worked from quick plot summaries or imperfect reference images, so they pushed familiar films into new territory. They added extra violence, horror, or sex, because shock sold seats. They also painted on stitched-together flour sacks, so the posters could survive constant rolling, sun, and rain.
Deadly Prey features work by the artists Heavy J, Salvation, Stoger, Mr. Nana Agyq, Farkira and Leonardo and includes introductory essays by Terry Zwigoff, Robert Kofi, and Brian Chankin.
