Scanned Football Photos: Maradona

Maradona grew up in poverty and died surrounded by wealth and excess. His life followed the familiar rise-and-fall arc linked to footballers of the 80s and 90s. He struggled with alcohol and cocaine, and lived at full volume, always chasing more and rarely feeling satisfied.

Yet his love for football stayed constant. He treated the ball with a softness and control few players have matched.

In this 368-page book, Maurice van Es sets out to portray Maradona (1960 to 2020) as fully as possible. Over four years, he scanned more than 1,000 images from magazines, postcards, fanzines, gossip press, and other printed sources.
